How to get your post listed on Planet Lotus the second it’s published.
Planet Lotus for some time now has offered a real-time feed update that anyone can perform. If you choose not to use this feature, no big deal, your feed is polled every 20 minutes. It does it in the order of everyone's last post. This way those that have posted recently will be checked last causing their new posts to be higher in the list.
To do a real-time update simply open your profile and click the real-time update icon. It looks identical to the view refresh icon in Notes; it's actually the same icon; it fell off a truck. Here are a couple of other things to consider.
- Once you click the icon it may take a few seconds to notice anything has been done. Its making a AJAX call in the backend to the rss collection class.
- Your post will show up immediately in your profile however the front page is created every 2 minutes so it all depends on where you fall into the creation of that page as to when it shows up.
-If you get an error back there are two different links to click, i often use feedvalidator.org. The validation links on your profile have your url already configured so you only have to click the link. This service will tell you exactly what is wrong with your feed. It is almost ALWAYS content related meaning you don't have to hack the design of your blog feed to get things working. The sad news is if you don't fix the problem feed it will take for that post to works its way through before any other new ones will be picked up.
-Please also notice the blog roll on the front page. If you see a red x or know someone who has a red x for an icon please ask them to check their feed. It takes a planet to raise a website.
FYI I plan on changing the profile urls in the coming weeks from:
http://planetlotus.org/blog.php?id=1&name=YancyLent
to
http://planetlotus.org/profile/YancyLent
If anyone has a better suggestion for a naming convention or url convention please feel free to pass along.
Enjoy!
