Yellow Day: Introducing the Domino Directory!
The Domino Directory is a showcase of sites build on Domino.
A place to show off your creation, promote your site or just point people to to see the potential of Domino.
Anyone can post a new site. There is a small team of editors to make sure your site submission is valid and complete.
The editorial team has been hard at work over the past couple months adding site, if you're site is not there add it, if you don't like the info on your site, create a new, better entry and add "UPDATE" to the post title.
A voting system has been added to identify the best site out there so go check out some new site design ideas and vote for your favorites sites today!
My email chain with Jake Howlett of CodeStore
Little does he know, he changed my mind. I was going to email him today to let him know. I'll just let the site decide, it has an amazing way of doing that, not only from hits but from blog posts that people write.
Read from the bottom up. I'm posting the raw email so you can see how I tried to work with him. I give him options, I ask him if things sound fair, I state my concern (the readers), I even asked "What would you do if you were me?"
Bottom line, this was an unfinished conversations between two professional trying to work something out. I can't figure out why he brought it public when no action was taken or no decisive decision was made.
And yes, my analogy sucked, and my spelling as well.
UPDATE: Forgot this second to newest email: "BTW: The only reason it concerns me is that some of my readers might now rely on your site to find out I've posted. if you remove my site then I lose readers. It's not "fair" that you abuse that power."

To: Yancy Lent <yancylent@yahoo.com>My last seven post have had between 100 and 300 hits on your site. I'd say that meant your visitors were interested in them (and two were about lotusscript anyway). People like the posts as they know they can read about Sharepoint from the POV of a Domino developer.
Do what you like though, I'm not really that bothered. I just think you're doing a dis-service to your visitors.
I talk about what I'm doing at the time. Right now it's Sharepoint. Next month it could be something amazing with Domino. Who knows...
If you do delist me I think you owe to the people who rely on your service to alert them to my new content to tell them that it's not me who's given up.

Right, but they're not going to Planet Lotus to read your posts, they're
going there to read all posts about Lotus. It's not a site that
aggregates "people who dig Lotus" it aggregates people that post about
Lotus, something that you've, from the looks of it, have moved on from.Plus, it's not like your posting about Java, you're posting about
SharePoint, it's like posting about Manchester United on a Liverpool or
Arsenal site. So, given we both developers, can't you just create a private Lotus
categorized feed, so PL only aggregates your Lotus posts? Many have done
this, i do this. No one that reads PL cares about the cycling posts I've
put up lately, and if they wanted to learn more about SP, or cycling
they could just go other places to get it.I don't see how the filtering of content to stay on topic is unfair.

Hi,
It might well be a short-lived trend. I wouldn't move it just yet ;o)

Here is his blog post....
Title: Goodbye Planet Lotus Readers?
The owner of Planet Lotus, Yancy Lent, asked me yesterday if he should move this site to "Planet Sharepoint" instead. At first I thought it was a joke, but it turns out he has a sister site just like the Lotus one that's only for SharePoint feeds.
Anyway, I said no, don't move it, as the SharePoint posts on here are likely to be short-lived, sporadic and intermingled with Lotus postings. And that, either way, they're of interest to the readers of the Lotus stuff as they're written by a Domino developer.
However, he seems quite insistent and hinted that he'd have to "de-list" me in the interim and asked if I thought was "fair". To which I said, no, I didn't think it was fair. Not unfair on me, but on the users who've grown to rely on his site as their one-stop source of Lotus postings.
If he de-lists me what happens then? Do the visitors I'd lose (7% of my hits) assume I've fallen off the face of the earth? Or do they then have to remember to check here directly or via RSS instead.
It all stinks a bit of control-freakery to me. Expecting to be able compartmentalise a list of blogs in to one bag is bound to be an impossible task. If he didn't have a Planet SharePoint site would his email ever have arrived I wonder?
Yancy said that was I was doing was like:
Coming to a Manchester United forum to talk about Arsenal.
But it's not though is it. Nothing is ever that black and white and his analogy just doesn't work.
What I said to Yancy is:
Do what you like though, I'm not really that bothered. I just think you're doing a dis-service to your visitors.
I also said:
I talk about what I'm doing at the time. Right now it's Sharepoint. Next month it could be something amazing with Domino. Who knows.
What I'm getting round to saying is that if you trust Planet Lotus as the definitive source of Lotus blog posts then maybe you need to be aware that what you're reading is being dictated to you.
I don't know what he's planning on doing, but wanted to make you aware of what he might do. If you're a Planet Lotus visitor and see no posts from me in the coming days or weeks then you know why. Might I suggest you use RSS or Twitter instead.
I put a quick survey here to see if you think what he's suggesting is a good idea. Let the people decide I say.
I read through some of the comments.
- IBM has nothing to do with this site.
- Planet Lotus is censored in the same way Sports Illustrated censors stories on the migratory patterns of the Green Turtle.
- There is a policy for what it takes to get a blog listed, this logically applies to what keeps a blog on the site. If you go off topic why wouldn't I address that?
Thank you for reading.
Help Wanted: Planet Lotus is Hiring.
Well, sort of. I have a Lotus Community project that I’d like to get off the ground however, this one I can’t do alone. I’m looking for someone out there that, if they believe in the project; would be willing to put a little elbow grease into its launch and maintenance. This role is all about dedication, thinking outside the box and giving back to the community all in return for some name recognition. Development skills are not necessary.
If you’re interested please drop me a line at yancy@collaborancy.com I have no clue how I'm going to pick from the application pool so impress me. I only ask that you keep the project under wraps until its public launch.
Stop Sametime window popping up in Sametime 8.02
This was reset during the Notes 8.5.1 upgrade . I can never remember where to stop the Sametime windows from popping up, hence, this post, to help in the future.
Preferences > Sametime > Notifications > One-on-one chat.
Deselect -> "Bring chat window to front."
“…and upcoming Lotus products.”
What?
On another note, On Thursday, August 27, Alistair Rennie and Kevin Cavanaugh will be guests on the “Taking Notes Podcast” with Bruce Elgort and Julian Robichaux. They will talk about the IdeaJam, Lotus Knows campaign, Smarter Planet and upcoming Lotus products.
Either this is really cool news buried in the second to last sentence of a blog post, I'm reading 'new' products into this, or I've been living under a rock. I'm guessing the latter. Either way I'm so listening to tomorrows Taking Notes Podcast.
Thanks for the heads up Bilal!
Search 10 Lotus community sites from one page.
Give it a try...

This idea actually came from a comment Peter Presnell posted on Nathan's blog. I would have left a comment saying how wonderful his idea was but I was gone coding this neat utility while it was fresh. Looking back at his suggestion. It would be great if high traffic, Lotus owned community sites would promote other non-Lotus community sites. Wouldn't that only serve to enhance end user self service, save money, elevate product knowledge and enhance brand loyalty?
Our community has too many downloads
Add to that widgets, session slides, example databases, third party products, whitepapers, your product, utilities, the files from your blog navigator... the list goes on. A couple weeks back I counted about 4 listed in blog posts over the course of a few days. Going back a little to the Notes 8.1 launch and the ensuing widget gold rush, I was amazed at how difficult it was to track things down downloads like Mikkel Heisterberg's twitnotes and the Turtle Partnership's widget database. This had me thinking... there has to be a better way.
It is with great joy that I announce planetlotus.org/downloads (beta), a community based catalog of any Lotus related download, period. It works in the spirit of download.com, shareware.com or tucows.com; it's a catalog of the downloads meta data. The posted URL will either directly kick off the download from a different site or bring you to a download landing page… like http://lekkimworld.com/twitnotes for more information.
To get started simply register for the forum (if you haven't already) and start adding. Your download will be given a specialized URL, (e.g., http://planetlotus.org/download/axceler-serveradmin-plus ). The URL works just like those on the planetlotus.org front page. They increment a click counter. There will be tag clouds, search, commenting, favorites, all in the works or completed.
Take a look! http://planetlotus.org/downloads
Please consider leaving any feedback on the forum (link below) so I can track and process it easier… http://planetlotus.org/forum/index.php/topic,70.0.html
To get started:
1. register for the forum: http://planetlotus.org/forum/
2. login to the Planet Lotus management area: http://planetlotus.org/manage/
3. click on manage downloads then *add.
* To start, make sure you only add downloads that are either yours or that you are a point person for. This will make management of the meta that much easier.
As a foot note, over the past 30 days the word download is the single most searched term on planetlotus.org… 148 times.
How I got started with Lotus Notes.
It all started as an intern at Massachusetts Port Authority. I was the assistant to the assistant of the Executive Director. I was at my desk doing my favorite task, cutting out Massport related articles from the local papers when the guy that's office was just past my desk asked me the one question that started it all. If you're looking for something to do we're trying to put together a spreadsheet based expense report; or something to that affect.
So there I was, automating a Lotus 123 v4 expense report. I was enamored by the macro recorder but the second I wrote my first @if statement my fait was sealed. I went on to transition to his team. It was a group of Process Re-Engineering consultants; all ex auditors from Ernst and Young (I believe) that came on full time to start up a Management Systems group.
One of our biggest projects was to audit and propose fixes for the lengthy contract approval process. At the time it took 105ish days to get 12 departments to sign off on a contract. We proposed they could do it in 5 days with a computer based approval system. I'm not sure who recommended the Lotus Notes; maybe my boss from back then will tap with comments. Either way they needed someone to maintain the application that a consulting company put together for us.
With the servers up and the application in place the flood gates opened. We had a three person team building every application we could think of. This was all around the version 3.3 time frame. Eventually upgrading to 4 meant more fun. I graduated Northeastern University in 96 and started full time. I worked there for a year fulltime before getting a job at Lotus.
The rest… 3 years of *internal Notes application work (remember the PPC database?) and 3 years of product development on the LearningSpace team at Lotus. (so 3 years in LDB, 2 in Rogers and 1 year in Westford). After that I started at my current employer Axceler (back then we were Percussion Software).
*I spent three years right clicking on these databases.
PS: A big Thanks to Chris, Randy, Cindy, Ron, David, Philis.... We made quite a team!
My most geeky chat ever… Nathan T Freeman-20080406.html
This IM started after I posted a comment on Nathan's "How I got started with Lotus Notes" post. Welcome to my inner geek. If you're interested in IM'ing with others in the community start here. Basically he said he was destine to be a Notes developer on the count of his NTF initials, where I commended "I knew I should of gone into fashion." count of my initials.... YSL.
