Your blog post comments are being stolen!
Really?
As many of you have seen, a couple days ago I implemented a way to post inline replies or lets call them what they are, comments; on the front page of Planet Lotus. The comments appear right under the blog post itself and any registered member of the forum can make them. This is a half ass effort of mimicking the functionality of Facebook and not an attempt to steal the conversation way from blog posts. Half assed in that a pure ripoff would be ideal; it's the single best thing, in my opinion, about Facebook, and why I loath twitter.
So, is it stealing the conversation away from the blog post? It certainly could be seen as that, but couldn't you also group the posts that get sent to http://twitter.com/planetlotus or the Planet Lotus Facebook group in the same way? Go take a look, people have made comments to those posts, but i don't think those comments are the same as the comments made on the blog post itself. I think the commenter fully understands that it's not a message to the poster but rather to those deciding weather to read the post. The same could be said for Twitter. The comments or replies made to a post are about the topic in general, the poster, etc. This is the same way I hope the replies on PL are used. A way to comment on the post as it relates to being listed on PL.
If PL has jumped the shark, maybe this is a way to go back in time, to that dreaded day; and tell Fonzie to stay home. You could use this as a way to make a comment without it showing up on the actual persons' blog post, just a message to other potential readers pondering the click. Think about it, take a hyperbolic title, you could call someone out on it. How about the 18th post saying 8.5.1 is available for download?
In the end, the user will decide. Just like in many other areas of the site, it could die a slow death. It looks like this is the case since I'm the only one using it
.
Planet Lotus server update
Some good news, however I'll wait a good month to rule out any DoS suspicions; hopefully it's just the paranoia.
Thank you for contacting Server Support. I understand your server is down after doing a reboot. After reviewing your server it appears that the servers fan went bad. We have replaced the fan and the server is running as normal.
As a result of this, the process of making things more efficient and up-time will continue to be front and center. Much of this is in the way of growing pains; for example the table that tracks hits was 3.3 million rows; this needs to be addressed over time; I have ideas; all of them will take time to implement. In the short term the de-emphasis of certain hit counters will appear, like job postings, how many hits a job posting receives just isn't that important. This theme will continue; but never leave the front page posts
Google Sidewiki
Google Sidewiki seems like a nice way to post graffiti like comments on Planet Lotus throughout the day. I've gone ahead and posted a note to get things started. If you're new to sidewiki here is the first article I found on it while looking up the date it was launched; Sept 23rd.
http://www.google.com/sidewiki/
Not sure how I stumbled across this tonight but its odd. All week I've been wanting to do something similar to PL after figuring out how to use Twitter OAuth for TwunLog.com, it would be nice to have an ajax like way to post small comments about posts on the PL main page.
So I'm curious, is anyone else using sidewiki?
Something I take very seriously.

I try to get to all Planet Lotus requests as soon as possible however a request like this moves right up the queue... in this case, processed right away.
What attention seeking whore wouldn’t take part in this?
The idea is simple, write a quality piece on anything Lotus and see if it has what it takes to win praise from Captains of our Industry.
Think about it, you might not have the skills to bust through the defensive line of the New England Patriots or score a goal on Manchester United, but surely you can get an article through the Lotus equivalent?
Give it a try and be considered "Published" in our community, with a lot less overhead.
Notes for Authors:
1. All drafts are private, viewable only by the author and the editor-in-chief.
2. Pending articles are only seen by the edit staff.
3. Published articles will be highlighted everywhere and you will be permanently added to the "Published Authors" page. (I will soon be removing myself from this page).
Notes for Editors:
1. A "Voting" link has been added to the Journal front page to make getting to the voting booth easier.
2. The voting RSS feed is live. It will alert you of new content to vote on (available on the voting page).
3. Your services are required, an article is currently watiing your comment or approval, check it out.
Lastly, big props to Daniele Vistalli for being the first to submit an article which I hope everyone will be enjoying soon.... and also to Ulrich Krause for adding some comments to Daniele's contribution.
Sorry in advance if the title offended anyone.
Why Lotus Journal?
My last project came out of true personal need, a better way to organize, read and keep track of all the Lotus blogs I was consuming. The result was a ton of reading. As the number of blogs in the community increased so did the reading. So, how to cull if you can’t read everything?
Hit counts, over time there has been much talk about this, for one, the use of catchy titles to drive up the numbers. This is a huge help in guiding my reading habit and has become a cornerstone of Planet Lotus. But the hit counts only capture trends and buzz… and aren’t going anywhere; if that’s what’s on your mind. To differentiate the buzz from the quality content I implemented the use of thumbs, yes the little Lotus thumbs up icon to allow members of PL to give a “nice post” to an author and give validation or light to those posts that are great in content but lack in the catchy title department. This never got off the ground. It’s still a part of myPL so feel free to resurrect it. The quest continues.
The more thought I put into it the bigger the idea got. In addition to shedding light on quality Lotus content I wanted to also deliver it beyond the Lotus Bubble. This was months ago when there was a lot of talk about the Yellow Bubble… and then the light bulb went off, of all places from my inbox. A spinoff of UrbanDaddy.com, maybe you’ve heard of it. I was going to create a ‘email only’ magazine (like UrbanDaddy) for the Lotus community. Draw from the amazing talent of bloggers and reach out of the bubble via daily email updates. The updates would contain articles; the best imaginable, as determined by and editorial staff of esteemed member of the community.
In theory it sounded great, but over time I was wrestling with the idea of an ‘email only’ magazine in a very social, very search friendly world, not to mention the Herculean development effort to make it happen. So maybe an hybrid approach, a very open, very prestigious, top notch professional journal for Lotus professionals with a twist, authorship is open all however only articles approved by esteemed Lotus community members will be published; and with that please welcome Lotus Journal to the community.
Lotus Journal will focus on authors, their content, editors and getting as many readers as possible with ties to social media, SEO and email subscriptions to extend the site hopefully beyond the bubble.
For more information take a look at the every changing about page currently at LotusJournal.com.
UPDATE: One last thing. This idea needs your help, please consider getting the word out, and if you have a moment I would truly appreciate to hear your take on the site, like Ben did this morning. I come up with, and create these ideas in a vacuum so they stay true to their purpose. Now, what better way to make it idea grow, then with your added ideas.
Enjoy!
“…and upcoming Lotus products.”
What?
On another note, On Thursday, August 27, Alistair Rennie and Kevin Cavanaugh will be guests on the “Taking Notes Podcast” with Bruce Elgort and Julian Robichaux. They will talk about the IdeaJam, Lotus Knows campaign, Smarter Planet and upcoming Lotus products.
Either this is really cool news buried in the second to last sentence of a blog post, I'm reading 'new' products into this, or I've been living under a rock. I'm guessing the latter. Either way I'm so listening to tomorrows Taking Notes Podcast.
Thanks for the heads up Bilal!
Fail: IBM My developerWorks Blog
I just received the second request to have a blog from IBM My developerWorks posted to Planet Lotus. The first was from a team inside IBM, this new one is really good, hence this post. The fail comes in the form of the invalid Connections feed. This was a problem in the early days of Connections but was fixed in version 2.0, not sure what is going on there.
Is there anyone out there that can help out?

In the mean time check out Michael Kinder's blog.
The Lotus Community, how would you organize its resources?
I've wanted to do this since Planet Lotus launched, organize all the wonderful resources available out there in the Lotus Community, the projects, websites, conferences, people, companies, products, you name it, everything and anything... Lotus.
Introducing the Planet Lotus Wiki or planetlotus.org/wiki/ or for a couple minutes during install, Lotipedia.
Worse case, this thing goes empty for years, best case, we have a community built and maintained road map to all that is available to those in our field.
To make things insanely straightforward the site is a generic build of MediaWiki, the same wiki software that drives Wikipedia.
Lastly, if anyone out there is looking to make this their baby, and would like elevated rights, let me know.
Lastly II, maybe this could be the first entry... http://www.timtripcony.com/dennis/elenchus.nsf
UPDATE: I will be shortening the url's used by the site over the next fiew days, making planetlotus.org/wiki/index.php/Tim_Tripcony this... planetlotus.org/wiki/Tim_Tripcony.
UPDATE II: URL's have been shortened so planetlotus.org/wiki/Tim_Tripcony will work and all links like it will be permanent.
